โ๏ธ Hidden Gems of Northeast Florida: Happy Exploring This June!
Greetings! ๐ด
June is here, bringing longer days, summer energy, and plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy everything Northeast Florida has to offer. โ๏ธ๐
This month, we recognize Juneteenth, a meaningful day in our nationโs history that commemorates freedom and reflects the strength and progress of our communities. Across the region, local events, music, and gatherings offer opportunities to come together and celebrate. ๐ถ๐ค
June is also Pride Month, a time to honor the LGBTQ+ community and the importance of inclusion, respect, and belonging. ๐ Our area continues to grow and evolve, and one of its greatest strengths is the diversity of the people who call it home and contribute to its vibrant character.
And of course, we take time this month to celebrate all the dads and father figures in our lives. Happy Fatherโs Day to those who guide, support, teach, and show up in all the everyday ways that matter most. ๐๐
As we move into summer, Northeast Florida is filled with festivals, music, outdoor activities, and hidden gems waiting to be explored. ๐ต๐๏ธ Whether you’re enjoying a local event, heading to the beach, or discovering a new favorite restaurant, June is a wonderful time to appreciate the lifestyle our communities offer.
This month’s newsletter is going to be a bit different and we are going to highlight some of Northeast Florida’s Hidden Gems that you may not know about. โจ
๐ฟ Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
“The kind of place that makes people say I had no idea this was here.”
One of Jacksonville’s best-kept secrets is Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Tucked away near Monument Road, this 120-acre preserve features wooded trails, lakes, wildflowers, and surprisingly diverse ecosystems. ๐ณ๐ผ Many longtime residents don’t discover it until years after moving here. It’s a peaceful alternative to the beach and a wonderful spot for morning walks, birdwatching, and photography. ๐ธ๐ฆ
๐ Boneyard Beach
“A place that feels more like the Pacific Northwest than Florida.”
Just north of Jacksonville on Big Talbot Island, Boneyard Beach looks like something from another world. Massive weathered trees line the shore, creating one of the most photographed natural landscapes in Florida. ๐๐ณ It’s especially stunning at sunrise and sunset and remains surprisingly unknown to many visitors.
๐ฐ Fort Clinch State Park
“One of Florida’s most underrated state parks.”
Located at the northern tip of Amelia Island, Fort Clinch State Park combines history, beaches, hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and some of the best shark-tooth hunting in the region. ๐ฆ๐๏ธ While tourists flock to St. Augustine’s fort, many locals overlook Fort Clinch, making it one of the area’s true hidden treasures.
๐ Chamblin Bookmine
“Lose yourself for an afternoon.”
This Jacksonville institution is a maze of books, records, maps, collectibles, and unexpected treasures. ๐๐ถ It has become something of a local legend among readers and treasure hunters. Community discussions regularly mention it as one of Jacksonville’s most unique hidden gems.
๐ถ Timucuan Preserve
“Old Florida still existsโyou just have to know where to look.”
Before the Spanish, there were the French, before the French there were Native Peoples…
Covering thousands of acres of marshes, waterways, historic sites, and nature trails, the Timucuan Preserve offers a glimpse of what Northeast Florida looked like centuries ago. ๐พ๐ Visitors can kayak through quiet creeks, hike scenic trails, and explore historic landmarks without ever leaving Jacksonville.
๐๏ธ Little Talbot Island
“The beach Florida forgot to commercialize.”
If you enjoy uncrowded beaches, Little Talbot Island is worth a trip to Amelia Island. ๐ Unlike some of the region’s busier shorelines, this state park offers miles of undeveloped coastline, hiking trails, kayaking opportunities, and excellent wildlife viewing. ๐ข๐ฆ
๐ข Sally Dark Rides
“A Jacksonville company helping create theme park magic worldwide.”
One of Jacksonville’s quirkiest hidden gems is Sally Dark Rides. This local company designs and manufactures amusement park rides and animatronics used around the world. ๐ โจ While not widely known outside industry circles, it’s a fascinating Jacksonville success story.
๐พ Castaway Island Preserve
โA hidden stretch of Old Florida where the marsh, water, and sky seem to slow everything down.โ
Tucked away along the Intracoastal Waterway, Castaway Island Preserve is one of Jacksonvilleโs quietest natural escapesโand still one of its most overlooked. ๐ ๐ถ With winding boardwalk trails, marsh views, and a peaceful kayak launch, it offers a simple, unhurried way to experience Northeast Floridaโs natural beauty. Itโs the kind of place you can visit for a quick walk and end up lingering longer than planned, watching birds skim the water or paddling through calm tidal creeks. ๐ฆ๐
๐ค Aunt Kate’s
“Where locals go when they want Old Florida seafood.”
Located on the Tolomato River away from the downtown crowds, it has been serving local seafood in one form or another for more than a century and offers beautiful waterfront views under sprawling live oaks. ๐ณ๐ฆ
